Happy 2012, Hackma-Campers!
This is one of my favorite times of the year: when I can begin looking forward to another wonderful summer with my favorite campers! Summer cannot come fast enough for me. I hope your holidays were warm, happy, and filled with people you love.
Choosing a show continues to be a challenge, as we juggle our desire to find shows that will provide quality music and literature with the need for a show that will display all your many talents, and help you grow as performers at the same time. No easy task! This year, my goal was to find a unique, high-energy show that would allow you to insert your own ideas and creativity into a well-known story.
Given those goals, we have found a fun and wacky musical version of Roald Dahl's Jack and the Beanstalk! The script is all in rhyme (think Dr. Seuss), the story is just a little strange, and the music is lovely. I am especially excited that this is an ensemble show - meaning everyone will have an opportunity to sing, speak, and dance, and will spend most of the show onstage, working together to create the world that Roald Dahl has outlined. The characters often speak and sing together, and there are many opportunities to be creative, crazy, and crafty!
I look forward to finding many ways we can make this show as entertaining as possible. As always, we will play games to help us grow as performers and audience members (especially working together as a group). We'll practice our lines, blocking, choreography, and expression. And you will all have the opportunity to help build and create your own sets and costumes.
I already know this summer is going to be a summer to remember. I look forward to seeing all my old campers back again, bringing their knowledge, experience, and smiles, and can't wait to meet new faces and welcome them to Hackmatack. Here's to another summer of making friends and memories, creating theater in a beautiful space with people we care about, and entertaining others!
